VE Day! 5/8/1945
I was just fifteen and my sister seventeen and a half and we were allowed to go down to Rawtenstall - in the
evening - closely followed by the three ever vigilant maiden aunts.
There was unaccustomed light and colour and music and boys; dancing and singing in the streets and boys.
Balloons and cake and cider - and boys. We knew it wasn't over - we all knew someone still out fighting 'the Japs'.-
but just for now we could thank God -and rejoice.
